Phase 1:
The Schiavone family worked in the Quinnipiac community for 35 years (from 1936 to 1971). After helping to restore New Haven’s downtown in the early 1980s and 1990s, the Schiavones searched for another neighborhood appropriate for restoration. In 1999 the Schiavones purchased their first property in the Quinnipiac community at 710 Quinnipiac Avenue. Between 1999 and 2005, they purchased another 17 buildings in the neighborhood. The Schiavone family and their partners and associates have renovated (or are renovating) all of these buildings and their yards, have restored apartments, and have been working with neighborhood organizations to eliminate crime, slow traffic and create neighborhood events. Thirty-nine dwelling units have been completed and are leased; two wonderful restaurants are open and operating successfully; and the recently opened Grand Vin Wine Shop attracts patrons from all over the state.
Phase 2:
In 2006 the revitalization project enters its next stage – the development at the heart of Quinnipiac River Village. This new development includes a pub/neighborhood bar, another major restaurant, ten new stores including a grocery store and 12 waterfront condos.
Phase 3:
The final phase will consolidate all of the revitalization effort. The neighborhood associations, homeowners and landlords in the area will continue to work together to bring major community events to the neighborhood. The regatta, the popular open air market and the holiday events will all be improved and expanded. Efforts will be made to place utility lines underground, as they are in much of New Haven. Residents will continue to spend extra time and energy on their houses and gardens. Everyone will be working on making the Quinnipiac River community a great place to work and to play.
When complete, the Quinnipiac River area will enjoy a well-deserved renaissance. This revitalized and energized community will become a major contributor to New Haven, the East shore and all of its own residents, homeowners and fellow investors.
